By researching on monitoring of fisheries resources, biodiversity conservation and ecological restoration in the Pearl River, the Laboratory of Fisheries Resources and Ecology systematically studied the dynamic regularity, competitive behaviors, succession of fish population, and the response to global environmental change. The Pearl River Drifting Fish Larvae Repository was constructed, and established the technical standards on sampling drift eggs and larvae and resources assessment. It is the first succeeded in building fishways on the Lianjiang River (a tributary of the Pearl River) and establishing related technological systems, providing technical guidance for sustainable development of fisheries economics and rational exploitation and management of fisheries resources in the Pearl River. The lab consists of two research platforms, the Experimental Station for Scientific Observation on Fisheries Resources and Environment in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Pearl River, MOA, and the Key Laboratory of the Conservation and Restoration of Fisheries Resources and Ecosystem in the Pearl River, CAFS. In last five years, over 60 projects were accomplished, 6 provincial scientific and technological progress awards were received, 30 national patents were granted, 50 articles (20 SCI) and 2 monographs were published, and 2 industry and 1 provincial standards were issued.
The lab consists of 11 in-service staffs, including 3 professors/associate professors, 7 assistant professors. 3 master’s supervisors were appointed. By January 2018, 1 researcher had finished the post-doctoral program and 12 master candidates graduated . It is equipped with more than 10 sets of instruments such as split-beam echosounder EY60, real quantitative fluorescence PCR, x-ray apparatus, high speed refrigerated centrifuge, and Nikon Eclipse TS100 inverted microscope.

1. Monitoring and evaluation on fisheries resources dynamics. (1) dynamic regularity; (2) monitoring and evaluation on spawning habitats; (3) water assessment and fishery productivity potential research; (4) fish behavior.
2. Investigation and conservation of fish biodiversity. (1) phylogenetics and biogeography; (2) characteristics of fish community structure and evolution dynamics; (3) fish population succession and estimation.
3. Restoration of fisheries resources and ecosystem. (1) impact assessment of water management projects on fisheries resources; (2) rehabilitation of spawning habitats and related functions; (3) stock enhancement and its performance evaluation; (4) river connectivity restoration.
