The Laboratory of Aquacultureand Nutrition was established in 1953,specializing on aquatic farming includingecological aquaculture, feed technology and quality improvement, water remediation, germplasm exploitation and selective breeding of tilapia and other freshwater fish, pond remediation, disease control and prevention and other relevant. Technical achievements of grass carp quality improvement and emission reduction R&D in aquaculture reached the international advanced level, and received aGuangdong Scientific and Technological Progress Award (2ndClass) in 2018. The technical innovation in tilapia breeding covered the whole industrial process and standardized the technological system. These remarkably promoted the industrial development of tilapia in China, and received aNational Scientific and Technological ProgressAward (2ndClass) in 2009,aGuangdongScientific and Technological Progress Award (1stClass) in 2010,and a Scientific and Technological Progress Award (1stClass) from the Ministry of Education in 2010.
The labconsists of 17 in-service staffs, including 9 professors/associate professors,8 assistantprofessors.3 doctoral and 8 master’s supervisors were appointed. By January 2018, 1 researcher had finished the post-doctoral program, 4 doctoral candidates entitled with PhD degree and 66 master candidates graduated. It is equipped with more than 30 sets of instruments such as atomic absorption spectrometer, microbial identification system, online monitoring system for water analysis, quantitative fluorescence PCR instrument, texture analyzer, high speed refrigerated centrifuge, inverted fluorescence microscope, multifunctional image analysis system, gel imaging system and nucleic acid and protein concentration analyzer.
