The Laboratory of Ornamental Fisherieswas established in June 2009, specializing on ornamental fish breeding, exploitation and sustainable utilization of recreational fisheries resources, industrial planning, policy research and management of recreational fishing. It established the living fossil Osteoglossidae germplasm repository and is the first succeeded in the artificial propagation ofScleropages formosus(Golden Arowana and Green Arowana) andOsteoglossum bicirrhosumin China and established corresponding technological system based on reference genome and genetic linkage maps.It consists of severalresearch platforms, the Key Laboratory of Recreational Fishing, MOA, the Subcommittee on Ornamental Fish of the National Standardization Technical Committee on Aquaculture, and Guangdong Advanced and Recreational Fishing Engineering Center. In last five years, over 60 research projects were accomplished, 8 provincial scientific and technological progress awards were received, 73 papers (37 SCI) and 19 monographs were published, 44 patents were granted, and 14 industry and 2 provincial standards were issued.
The lab consists of 11 in-service staffs, including4 professors/associateprofessors, 7 assistant professors. 3 master’s supervisors were appointed.By January 2018,15 master candidates had been graduated. It is equipped with more than 6 sets of instruments such as genetic analyzer, quantitative fluorescence PCR, ultracentrifuge, multi-mode microplate reader, AKTA purifier and optical inverted microscope.
Research scope:
1. Ornamental fish breeding
(1) Collection, identification, conservation and exploitation of ornamental fish germplasm resources; (2) Creation and propagation of new species; (3) Development of Functional feed R&D and production techniques.
2. Exploitation and sustainable utilization of recreational fisheries resources
(1) Species exploitation and releasing techniques; (2) Baits and Plugs R&D and quality identification; (3) Environment protection and biosecurity in recreation areas.
3. Industrial planning, policy research and management of recreational fishing
(1) Assessment of ecological and economic benefits and strategic research; (2) Analyzing, drafting and revising relevant standards; (3) Construction and management of recreation ponds and aquaria.
