The Laboratory of Aquatic Germplasm Resources and Genetic Breedingwas established in 1979 by Mr. ZHONG Lin, the Father of Artificial Propagation of Pond Fish. Research scope is aquatic germplasm resources and genetic breeding, as one of the principal academic disciplines in PRFRI since the beginning. By applying researches on exploitation of genetic resources, artificial breeding, and genetic improvement of fish, turtles and shrimps, a series of significant scientific and technological progress were achieved and over 10 national and provincial awards were received. In recent years, researches concerning germplasm resources and genetic improvement of fish and turtles, and conservation of endangered species have promoted the industrial development and generated great economic, social and ecological benefits.
The lab consists of 12 in-service staffs, including 4 professors/associate professors, 8 assistant professors. 4 doctoral/master’s supervisors were appointed. training 7 doctoral candidates has been entitled with PhD degree and 36master candidates graduated. It is equipped withmore than 20 sets of instruments such as laser scanning confocal microscopy, genetic analyzer, quantitative fluorescence PCR instrument, flow cytometry, cytogenetics workstation, cryostat, and various types of centrifuges and PCR instruments.
Research scope:
1.Breeding of all-male hybrid snakehead and industrialization
2.Early propagation and breeding of fast-growingPelodiscus sinensis
3.Breeding of high-fecundityMauremys mutica
4.Conservation and breeding ofPelochelys cantorii, a wildlife under the 1stclass protection of the national government
5.Development mechanism of turtle germ cells and the transplantation technology
6.Collection and Establishment of the DNA barcode database for important aquatic organisms in the Pearl River Basin
